Mia Shem has bid a deeply emotional farewell to her beloved uncle, Assaf Ben-David, a man she described as “like a father to me.” In her poignant tribute, she wrote, “My broken heart can no longer contain it. Thank you for what you did for me.”
On October 7th, in the midst of the devastating attacks, Mia’s uncle bravely set out for Nova to search for her, witnessing unspeakable horrors in his quest. From that day on, he tirelessly dedicated himself to ensuring her safe return, pouring every ounce of his strength into the effort.
Tragically, the unimaginable weight of what he endured, coupled with the months of relentless work and speaking to other families of hostages became too much to bear and he fell into deep despair and depression.
This week, he took his own life, leaving behind two young children.
He will forever be remembered as a hero of Israel-a man of profound courage, unwavering love for his family, and deep devotion to his nation. May his sacrifice and memory serve as a lasting source of inspiration and unity.
