In just three seasons, And Just Like That… succeeded in serving us a litany of unhinged moments, including armpit-licking, a puppet’s bulge, and Carrie Bradshaw’s gargantuan hat. As it turns out, we can thank Sarah Jessica Parker for the latter’s obstructive debut. During a Q&A with Evan Ross Katz at il Buco al Mare in Amagansett on August 11, SJP revealed that it had been her grand idea to plop that ludicrously capacious hat upon Carrie Bradshaw’s head.
“I personally love hats on Carrie. I love it,” SJP said, according to People. “So the minute I saw that hat, I’m sure I said something similar to, how do I get that on my head? How do we convince Michael Patrick [King] it’s necessary? And what scene can it go in that we can make a case in front of the court and we can say, ‘No, Michael Patrick, this is not going to be distracting, this is going to be great?’” While it was great, it was also distracting — did Carrie really need to have a monstrous swath of gingham on her head while eating sherbert in Washington Square Park?
Back in June, SJP told USA Today that eventually, she wore King down about Carrie’s affinity for hats. “His eyes have adapted to large-scale things on heads now, so he’s pretty generous about how often they can appear,” she said.
SJP noted that the hat, designed by Maryam Keyhani, was “massive and shapeless” and that its fabric — linen — is “an enemy of shape and form,” which contributed to the hat’s excessive floppiness and whimsical aura. Michael Patrick King even likened it to “the Hindenburg balloon,” according to Glamour, although he concluded that “it is amazing.”
Although we said goodbye to Carrie in AJLT form, if the Sex and the City gods ever bless us with another unhinged reboot maybe we’ll get another ridiculously enormous hat. One can only hope.
