In the late 1980s, when Israel wasn’t yet 50 years old, it became the eighth country in history to launch a satellite into outer space. Defense needs drove the goal to breach the atmosphere, but the civilian potential quickly became apparent, and Israel turned itself into a powerhouse that has operated more than 50 satellites to date, for uses ranging from photoreconnaissance to missile defense.
