ASKED THREE TIMES: Mamdani Won’t Call for Resignation of Democrat Who Promoted ‘The International Jew’

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani refused to call for the resignation of a Brooklyn politician for promoting a video extolling Henry Ford’s antisemitic publication, The International Jew, a series of pamphlets he published in The Dearborn Independent, a weekly paper that he owned, as well as for blaming a property dispute on the “Zionists.”

Reporters from Jewish Insider asked him on three separate occasions if he had anything to say about the matter, but he refused to answer.

Carmella Charrington was elected to the position of Democratic district leader for Assembly District 56 in Brooklyn, where she serves in the critical, albeit unpaid, role of community and party liaison.

Charrington became infamous in her small part of the world for her role in a property dispute, claiming to be a victim of deed theft and blaming the Jewish investors in her building, whom she called Zionists and whom she accused of having ties to Israeli settlements. Ultimately, New York Attorney General Letitia James found that the case was instead a complicated dispute over her father’s estate.

At the time, Mamdani did denounce Charrington’s attacks on the building’s investors, with his team putting out a statement saying, “Suggesting that an alleged deed theft in Brooklyn is part of a global conspiracy involving Jewish people is blatant, reprehensible antisemitism. Trafficking in these dangerous antisemitic tropes is vile and inexcusable.”

He, along with James and City Council Speaker Julie Menin, who also condemned the posts, stopped short of calling for her resignation.

Other New York Democrats have demanded that she step aside, however.

“Jewish New Yorkers are being attacked. Synagogues are being targeted. Public officials have a duty to lower the temperature and not amplify rhetoric that endangers their neighbors,” district leader and Assembly candidate Joey Cohen-Saban wrote on social media. “Charrington has repeatedly crossed that line without remorse. She is unfit for public office and must resign. Every Brooklyn Democratic leader and anyone seeking to lead this party must say so clearly and unequivocally. No excuses. No equivocation. Period.”
