A Syrian soldier has acknowledged that Turkish troops were stationed at the Abu al-Duhur airbase near Idlib when the facility was struck by Israel last week, contradicting official Turkish denials of a military presence at the site.
The admission emerged in a video posted to social media and later highlighted by the Alma Research and Education Center and translated by Dr. Hay Eytan Cohen Yanarocak. The soldier, who serves in the area, said both Syrian and Turkish troops were present at the base.
“We were attacked last night by Israel,” the soldier said. “We are in Syria. There are Turkish soldiers here and Syrian soldiers.”
According to the soldier, Israel had been monitoring the Turkish presence at the base with drones for months before launching the strike. He claimed Israel deliberately targeted the facility to prevent Turkey from expanding its presence there.
The soldier is reportedly of Turkish origin and is believed to be a former jihadist who joined the Syrian military following the establishment of the country’s new regime.
His account directly contradicts Ankara’s denials and indicates that Turkish forces had maintained a presence at the airbase for months before the Israeli strike.
