HAPPENING NOW: Police Open Fire With Riot-Control Rounds as Ceuta Migration Protests Erupt Into Clashes
Tensions exploded in Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta as riot police fired deterrent shots and anti-riot munitions after a massive protest against the government’s handling of the migration crisis spilled toward the beachfront. Footage circulating online shows officers firing as crowds confront police lines. Spanish reports have not yet clearly confirmed that the projectiles were rubber bullets.
Thousands of Ceuta residents had marched demanding deportations and denouncing Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s response. Later, roughly 200–300 protesters moved toward El Trampolín beach, where migrants remain camped. Some demonstrators tore down shelters, threw belongings into the sea and hurled stones, prompting riot police to move between the two groups.
The unrest comes weeks after an extraordinary mass crossing overwhelmed Spanish authorities. Spain’s government says approximately 72,000 migrants entered Ceuta irregularly during the late-July surge, with military and police reinforcements deployed after border forces were overwhelmed. The scale of that breach has become the central grievance driving the growing protests.
