Switzerland’s Federal Intelligence Service has released a 200-page dossier on Nazi war criminal Josef Mengele, decades after authorities had planned to keep the material classified until 2071.
The documents were made public after historian Ruedi Weitstein successfully petitioned a federal administrative court. The file includes arrest warrants, entry bans, police reports, and investigations into individuals who may have helped Mengele find shelter.
According to the documents, Mengele may have returned to Switzerland after fleeing Germany, or at least planned to enter the country. Previous reports indicated that he entered Switzerland in 1956 under the false identity “Dr. Helmut Gregor.” An international arrest warrant was issued against him three years later.
Swiss intelligence officials said they made as few redactions as possible, withholding only information needed to protect sources, employees, and the privacy of third parties.
Mengele, known as the “Angel of Death,” conducted horrific medical experiments on prisoners and children at Auschwitz, where approximately one million Jews were murdered. After the war, he fled to South America and died by drowning off the coast of Brazil in 1979.
