On Monday night, 60 blocks south of the CFDA Fashion Awards’ takeover of the American Museum of Natural History was another gathering of the who’s who in fashion and art: the Dia Art Foundation’s annual fall gala, co-hosted by Chanel, with the man, the myth, the legend Matthieu Blazy in attendance.
The nonprofit’s charitable event honored American artist Roni Horn and British film director Steve McQueen. It also marked the second Dia event supported by Chanel after the French fashion house announced their partnership in May; the first was the Dia Beacon benefit last spring. Inside the brick-walled space, guests including Julio Torres, Marina Abramović, and Candace Bushnell sipped Champagne before making their way to sit at extra-long dinner tables decked out in red-rose tablescapes and lit candles. Director Sofia Coppola and husband Thomas Mars, of Phoenix fame, chatted with Oscar winner Marion Cotillard. Both women were dressed by Chanel: Coppola wore a textured dress woven with black leather strands, while Cotillard was in a white tennis dress featuring a drop-waist belt. Two tables over, Blazy sat next to artist Carrie Mae Weems, another co-chair of the Dia’s 2026 fall gala with the two presumably bonding over the intersection of their industries.
As my seatmate Christine Messineo, the director of Americas for Frieze, informed me over bread and butter, what makes the Dia Art Foundation’s events special is the motley multigenerational community they bring together. At my table, I noticed octogenarians sitting alongside 30-somethings, each acclaimed in the art industry in their own way.
