Anne Hathaway has covered a lot of ground in 2026. She played a global pop sensation in Mother Mary, believably reprised her role as Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada 2, embodied the queen of Ithaca in The Odyssey, and fought her way through a sci-fi disaster scenario as Denise Platt in The End of Oak Street. After all that, her biggest acting challenge of the year is still to come: a character with believable motivations in a Colleen Hoover adaptation. Verity, based on Hoover’s 2018 best-selling psychological thriller of the same name, is out October 2, and a new trailer for the movie hints at the uphill battle Hathaway has ahead of her.
Hathway plays Verity Crawford, a best-selling author who mysteriously loses her ability to walk, talk, and write. To finish her final book, her husband, Jeremy (Josh Hartnett), brings in an emerging writer named Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson) to complete the series. At various points in the trailer, Hathaway’s Verity is terrifying as a barely mobile woman in a wheelchair, menacing as the author of an unpublished autobiography, and violent as a shapeshifter who spontaneously possesses her husband’s body while he’s making out with Lowen (?). “A writer’s words should be honest, and bloody, and a little bit terrifying,” Verity says at one point. Sounds like an apt description of Hoover’s work if ever there was one. It’s just missing one qualifier: They should also make a shit ton of money at the box office. Whether or not Hathaway’s character is realistic, this movie seems right on track to do that.
