Anti-Jewish Hate Crimes Soar by 182% in First Month • Jewish Breaking News

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has a first month record on crime to be proud of. Murders fell to their lowest level for January ever in recorded history. Retail theft fell by 16 percent, while overall crime in School Safety Zones fell by 50 percent. But Jews might take cold comfort from that, given that hate crimes against Jews soared by 182 percent in the first month of his administration.

Overall hate crimes rose by 152 percent to 58 incidents in January compared to 23 in January 2025. More hate crimes against Jews were recorded than for all other groups combined: 31 to 27, with the second-highest at seven incidents for Muslims. Asians and sexual orientation tied for third place at five. Three incidents were reported for religion (other than Jewish and Muslim), two each for Black and gender and one each for white, age, and Hispanic.

In short, Jews accounted for 54.4 percent of all hate crimes in January, despite making up about 12 percent of the population. Muslims accounted for 12 percent at roughly the same share of the population.

Jessica Tisch, commissioner of the New York Police Department, deserves to take her victory lap.

“For the first month of the year, the women and men of the NYPD delivered the fewest shooting incidents, victims, and murders in recorded history,” she said in a statement on the NYPD website. “These results show that this department remains focused on building on the historic public safety gains made last year. Our strategy is simple: don’t just get tough on crime, get smart. And deploy the best police officers in the nation to get it done and make New York safer.”

But the bottom of the page conceded some losses. In addition to the 182 percent rise in hate crimes against Jews, rapes rose by 6.4 percent.

Jewish leaders were quick to sound the alarm.

The jump in hate crimes against Jews is “staggering,” said Scott Richman, director of the Anti-Defamation League’s New York region, in an interview. “From swastikas at a playground in Borough Park to a car ramming at Chabad headquarters in Crown Heights, the Jewish community in New York City is very much on edge.”

“In the face of this, we urge Mayor Mamdani to quickly name the next head of the Mayor’s Office to Combat Antisemitism and to appoint a leader who will both represent this diverse Jewish community and confront all forms of antisemitism,” he added.
