Body of missing soldier Tzvi Feldman recovered from Syria after 4 decades

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Sunday that the body of missing IDF soldier Tzvi Feldman, who fell in the Battle of Sultan Yaqoub during the First Lebanon War in June 1982, was returned to Israel in a special operation by the Mossad and the IDF in Syria.

Prime Minister Netanyahu arrived at the Feldman family home in Tel Aviv along with his military secretary and the coordinator of the Sh’an in order to personally inform the family of his return to Israel after 43 years.

“About six years ago, we returned Zachary Baumel for burial in Israel, today we returned Tzvi and we will not stop working to return Yehuda Katz, who is still missing from that battle,” Netanyahu said.

Feldman was killed in the Battle of Sultan Yaqoub in the First Lebanon War in 1982, and was considered missing for about 43 years. 20 IDF soldiers were killed in the battle, and about 30 more were wounded.

“In the decades that have passed since then, efforts to locate him and update his family have not stopped for a second,” Netanyahu stated.

“I promised the Feldman family that I would never stop working to bring Tzvi home. Unfortunately, his parents – Pnina and Avraham – have already passed away. But today we are returning him to his brothers – Itzik, Shlomo and Anat – and to the land of the Land of Israel that he loved so much.”

He concluded his remarks by quoting the words of the prophet Jeremiah: “And there is hope for your future, says the Lord, and the children shall return to their own border.”
