Released hostage and Golani Brigade soldier Edan Alexander announced that he will return to Israel next month to resume military service.

“Next month, God willing, I will return to Israel. I will once again put on the IDF uniform, and I will proudly serve alongside my brothers,” Alexander shared with a sold-out crowd of 1,200 at the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) Night to Salute Our Heroes in New York. “My story does not end with survival – it continues with service,” he added.

Alexander was captured on October 7, 2023, and held hostage for 584 days before being released four months ago. His comments at the FIDF gala were his first in public since his return from captivity. He thanked those who secured his freedom and called for urgent action to release the remaining hostages.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – OCTOBER 07: Republican presidential nominee, former U.S. President Donald Trump, poses for photos with the family of Edan Alexander at Ohel Chabad Lubavitch on October 07, 2024 in New York City. Trump commemorated the one-year anniversary of October 7th by visiting to Ohel Chabad Lubavitch, the final resting place of Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson the Rebbe, with the family of Edan Alexander, who was taken hostage by Hamas on October 7th, in attendance. On October 7, the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel from Gaza by land, sea, and air, killing more than 1,200 people and taking Israeli soldiers and civilians hostage. To date, there are over 90 people still being held hostage by Hamas. (Photo by Michael M. Santiago/Getty Images)

Maj. General (Res.) Nadav Padan, FIDF CEO, said: “Edan’s story is a reminder of why we must continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with IDF soldiers and their families. His devotion to the State of Israel, even after enduring unimaginable hardship, is an inspiration to us all. We are profoundly grateful for Edan’s safe return, and we salute the extraordinary efforts of the IDF and the soldiers who never stop fighting to bring their brothers and sisters home.”

The FIDF event raised millions of dollars to support the health, well-being, and education of Israel’s soldiers, reservists, veterans, and their families.

Since October 7, 2023, the FIDF has mobilized more than $306 million to address urgent well-being needs resulting from the multi-front war — including emergency medical supplies, wounded soldier rehabilitation, bereaved family support, and a historic $118 million initiative for comprehensive mental-health treatment for soldiers, veterans, and families.
