Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) made a shocking revelation in a statement about his vote for Rep. Thomas Massie’s (R-Ky.) amendment to block military aid to Israel.
His statement appeared to imply that, as Jewish Insider’s Josh Kraushaar said, his vote “was cast under duress.”
“I am deeply concerned about the tactics used by those on the far left to advocate for cutting off aid to Israel,” Smith wrote. “To date, my family and I have had our home vandalized, a fire has been set in my driveway, my neighbors’ lives have been disrupted by demonstrations in the middle of the night, town halls meant to be forums for dialogue have been shut down, and a staff member has been physically assaulted.”

He described his ironclad support for Israel as stemming from his recognition that “they are under profound existential threat.”
“We should not forget October 7th or the reality that Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran want to eliminate Israel,” he added, accusing Israel’s opponents of malice. “I also recognize that many of those who want the U.S. to completely abandon Israel do not support Israel’s right to exist and are willfully blind to the dangerous, violent, extremist beliefs of Hamas and others who threaten Israel,” he said.
Smith defended his vote earlier this week to end military aid to Israel, saying he had grown frustrated with the Netanyahu government, the way it has prosecuted the war on several fronts, and the extremism of some of the members of the coalition.
Before this vote, Smith boasted a solid pro-Israel voting record. As the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, he had consistently voted for aid to Israel, supported pro-Israel positions and accepted money from AIPAC for his political campaigns.
Eli Lake, a journalist, podcaster and contributor to the Free Press, slammed the tactics that may have swayed Smith’s vote, saying that these methods actually worked.
“The jackals who set a fire in the congressman’s driveway and demonstrated in the middle of the night should be named, shamed and prosecuted,” he wrote on X. “By voting for the Massie amendment, Rep. Adam Smith just told these scumbags that these tactics work.”
