Investigators moved quickly, and within two days, a 30 year old suspect from Brampton, Mohamed Mahdi, was taken into custody and charged with multiple firearm-related offenses. The community credited increased police presence in Jewish neighborhoods, particularly during Pesach, for helping lead to the quick arrest.

Toronto Police emphasized that specialized units, including counter-terror and hate crime teams, were involved in the response, trying to give the local Jewish community confidence that they are doing their best to help.

Many in Toronto’s Jewish community expressed that the timing during Pesach has only deepened the sense of unease, and while the arrest has brought some reassurance, the community and even other locals can’t help but feel like this is starting to become a norm.
