At the end of July, up to 80,000 people, mostly young men, breached the border between Morocco and the Spanish territory of Ceuta, crossing on foot or swimming around the breakwater. Reception centers in the tiny peninsula with a population of 85,000 were completely overwhelmed; Madrid deployed extra forces to this exclave on the northwest tip of Africa and asked European border agency Frontex for aid. At least 100 migrants are reported to have died in their attempt to make it to Europe.
