The United Kingdom formally inaugurated a Palestinian embassy in London on Tuesday, months after the Labour government recognized a Palestinian state on September 21, 2025, in support of a two state solution based on 1967 borders.
The new embassy in Hammersmith was opened by Hussam Zomlot, the Palestinian Authority’s ambassador to the UK. Zomlot previously served as the top Palestinian diplomatic representative in Washington until his U.S. visa was revoked by the Trump administration in 2018, effectively ending his tenure in the United States.
At the opening ceremony, Zomlot pledged renewed efforts to “free Palestine” end what he described as “the occupation,” establish a Palestinian state with eastern Jerusalem as its capital, push for an arms embargo on Israel, and pursue international accountability measures.
Supporters of the move hailed the embassy opening as a historic milestone for Palestinian statehood. Critics, however, condemned the decision as premature, pointing to the Palestinian Authority’s continued “pay for slay” program that provides financial stipends to families of attackers, and questioning whether the PA meets the basic criteria of statehood.
The event was attended by foreign diplomats and members of Parliament, but notably no senior UK government ministers were present. The embassy’s opening underscores a visible shift in UK Israel relations amid ongoing tensions related to Gaza.
