U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that federal agents have arrested 16 individuals in Minnesota, including a Somali-American activist who recently went viral for her “bananas and rice” remarks, as part of a widening crackdown on anti-ICE unrest in Minneapolis.
“I am on the ground in Minneapolis today,” Bondi wrote on X. “Federal agents have arrested 16 Minnesota rioters for allegedly assaulting federal law enforcement, people who have been resisting and impeding our federal law enforcement agents. We expect more arrests to come.”
One of those arrested was Nasra Ahmed, 23, of St. Paul, who gained national attention after a Jan. 21 press conference where she described her Somali-American identity using the phrase “bananas and rice,” a clip that quickly went viral.
Following her initial arrest, Ahmed accused ICE agents of kidnapping and assaulting her during a separate incident in her neighborhood, claiming she was mistakenly detained while federal agents arrested two other men. She alleged agents used a racial slur and said she was held in County Jail for two days.
The Department of Homeland Security disputed Ahmed’s account, accusing her of assaulting federal agents during the encounter. DHS officials say video from the incident shows Ahmed spitting at agents, though further details have not been released.
Bondi made clear the enforcement effort will continue, writing, “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: NOTHING will stop President Trump and this Department of Justice from enforcing the law.”
Federal officials say the investigation remains ongoing and additional arrests are expected.
