WATCH: Chaos Erupts in Ceuta as Thousands of Migrants Rush for 1,800 Shelter Spots

Chaos erupted in Ceuta again Friday, as the government attempted to move migrants from makeshift beach tents to temporary housing that can hold about 1,800.

The roughly 4,000 migrants living on the beach stormed checkpoints and overran the streets in their haste to secure the coveted spots.

The crisis in Ceuta began on July 30, when utter chaos erupted across the autonomous city as roughly 72,000 migrants, mostly young men, poured over the border from Morocco into the Spanish city, triggering a massive humanitarian crisis. Within days, nearly 70,000 returned to Morocco, but thousands still remained in Ceuta.

Video footage showed migrants flooding stores and clashing with police, while other footage appeared to show Moroccan authorities emptying out truckloads of young men at the border. Although Morocco is supposed to enforce border control, some migrants have said that the border guards simply let them through.

The crisis caused tensions to flare among EU countries, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni threatening to suspend the Schengen Agreement, which allows for free movement between countries, as she slammed Spain’s lax immigration policies for creating an environment that allowed such a catastrophic crisis to explode.

The government of Ceuta estimates that roughly 13,000 migrants remained in the city following the mass migration.

Friday’s operation included hundreds of police and security personnel, but the situation quickly spiraled out of control as thousands of migrants ran shouting through the streets. Police struggled to control the crowds, firing warning shots into the air.

The new facilities offer tents, beds, showers, toilets, and food, but the number of migrants far exceeds the number of available spots.
