On Monday, Mercury stations direct (meaning, no longer retrograde) in optimistic Sagittarius, giving the first day of the year an air of excitement and possibility. Don’t be coy about your ambitions: write them down, speak them aloud, brainstorm with your friends how to achieve them. Changing your life won’t be easy, but you’re more than up for the challenge. Then on Thursday morning, Mars enters Capricorn. And while Mercury in Sagittarius gives you the courage to imagine a better world, Mars now adds the determination to turn your dreams into reality. You won’t see the results you want overnight, so be patient. You’re playing the long game. In the meantime, find the weekly horoscope for each zodiac sign, below.

Self-confidence is important, but overestimating your own abilities is a recipe for trouble. It makes it all too easy to bite off more than you can chew at work, commit to community projects you don’t have time for, or consistently overcommit yourself socially. This past year, you’ve had to step on the brake and re-evaluate what you’re willing and able to take on. After a period of self-doubt, your boldness is returning. You’ve gotten to know yourself better. Start trusting your instincts again.

People in your life have disappointed you recently, showing themselves to be less upstanding or honest or kind than you want them to be. Maybe your friends have been making choices you don’t approve of; maybe someone you put on a pedestal turned out to be an ordinary, flawed human being. You’re allowed to feel frustrated and disenchanted, but it’s also important to make sure that you’re holding people to reasonable standards. Don’t expect perfection of anyone — including yourself. Focus on effort and growth, not having all the answers.

Every day, you’re called on to respond to myriad minor issues. You’re constantly solving problems, navigating confusing social situations, making thoughtful decisions about how to move through the world. With so many immediate demands on your attention, you’re often left with no energy to put toward the big picture, and all your long-term plans keep getting pushed to the bottom of the to-do list. This week, try to prioritize meaningful goals. Yes, the small stuff matters, but take extra care right now to make sure it doesn’t crowd out your dreams.

You’re careful not to let selfishness or ego run your life. You want to make decisions based on your values, not chase mindlessly after accolades and recognition, and you try to do what’ll be best for everyone, not just for you. Your generosity of spirit is admirable, but be careful not to be so self-effacing that you end up neglecting your own needs. Running yourself into the ground won’t help anyone, and you can’t pour from an empty cup, so this week, refill yours without guilt.

It’s been difficult to muster the energy to get anything done lately. You’ve felt like you’re treading water, managing to do the bare minimum but not making any progress. This week, you can expect a swell of new strength and motivation. It’s an ideal time to return to projects you’ve lost steam on, to recommit to your purpose in life. That isn’t to say it’ll be effortless, only that you have the fortitude to persevere.

You aren’t always great at respecting your own limitations. You expect yourself to work without ceasing until the task is complete, no matter how badly you need a break. In the short term, this is effective; in the long term, it inevitably leads to burnout. This week, your challenge is to find a better balance. You’re a human being, and humans need time to rest and to enjoy themselves too, not just to work. It doesn’t matter how much is on your plate. You deserve to stop pushing and move at a more comfortable pace instead.

Lately, you’ve felt like you have to be in constant forward motion, always keeping up with the latest trends and technologies, continually reinventing yourself. While it is important to stay open to change and not get stuck in the past, you don’t have to discard the old parts that are important to you just to make room for the new. This week, you might return to projects you thought you’d left behind, pick up old hobbies that you’ve been neglecting, get back in touch with people you miss. You’ve grown, but that doesn’t mean you have to cut ties.

You don’t always tell others how you feel because you’ve learned the hard way that it can lead to more trouble than it’s worth. Not everyone handles honesty well — no matter how kindly and respectfully it’s delivered — preferring pleasantries to depth and shallow agreeability over genuine connection. This week in particular, it’s worth it to say what you mean and be direct. It could lead to uncomfortable conversations, even arguments, but that’s far from the worst thing in the world. You might be surprised by how freeing it is to stop hiding and get your emotions and desires out in the open.

Your competitive spirit is a wonderful trait. It means you aren’t scared of a challenge, won’t roll over and give up when things get tough. The problem is that sometimes you’re so hellbent on winning for its own sake, you forget what you were pursuing in the first place. Having more than other people, or being “better” or more successful than they are, isn’t going to bring you happiness. So this week, take a step back and think about what you’re actually looking for. Don’t waste all your energy competing for something that doesn’t matter to you. If you’re going to fight, make sure it’s worth it.

Some people prefer to deal in abstractions and possibilities, but you’re more interested in what actually is. It’s not enough for you to imagine new worlds. You want to see change here, now. And this week, you have the opportunity to get results. Witness how your actions make a difference, whether you’re helping people that need it, confronting those causing harm, or doing creative work that will inspire. Don’t overthink it or get stuck in the planning process. Just get out into the world and play your part.

As you reflect on the last year, you worry that you don’t have much to show for it. You’ve grown as a person, but so much of that work has been private and internal that others may not recognize it. It would be easy to beat yourself up over the idea that you haven’t done “enough,” but instead, try to embrace the fact that you’re doing this for you. Ultimately, there’s nobody to impress and nothing to prove. This week, the only person you have to satisfy is yourself.

Sometimes the only way to get things done is to do them yourself. Working independently is often productive, and solitude can be energizing for you. This week, though, trying to do everything on your own is more likely to leave you feeling discouraged and lonely. What you need is support: friends to talk through ideas with you, to affirm that you’re on the right track, to lend a hand when it gets tough. Dealing with other people can sometimes be a hassle, but this week, the rewards will more than outweigh any stress.
