Three Arab children from the village of al-Jiftlik accidentally detonated a mine, killing one and injuring the others. IDF troops immediately rendered emergency aid at the scene to the injured.
The child was identified as 13-year-old Mohammed Abu Dalah. The IDF said the children were playing with unexploded ordnance near the Tirzah military base, which houses a military shooting range.
“The IDF emphasizes that this area is a firing zone and entry into it is strictly prohibited and highly dangerous,” the IDF said.
The Red Crescent said in a statement, “Our crews received the body of a 13-year-old child who was killed after a mine exploded in one of the old camps in al-Jiftlik in the northern Jordan Valley.”
The village council head, Ahmad Ghawanmeh, said the children were gathering herbs near the village when the mine detonated. He added that the IDF did not allow anyone into the area where the explosion occurred. The site is in Area C, which, according to the Oslo Accords, falls under Israel’s jurisdiction.
This particular area is allegedly rife with unexploded munitions due not only to its proximity to the military shooting range but also to decades of conflict dating back to Israel’s War of Independence in 1948. The IDF recently conducted a sweep of the region to clear out mines.
