Another potential attack was thwarted Wednesday after a man carrying a knife and a baseball bat entered 770 Eastern Parkway, the world headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.
According to reports from the scene, worshippers and yeshiva students quickly confronted the suspect and forced him out of the building before police arrived. During the response, a sharp-eyed female NYPD officer reportedly noticed the suspect was carrying a knife, immediately disarmed him, and took the weapon into custody before the situation could escalate further.
The incident comes just months after another alarming attack at the same location. In that case, a man repeatedly rammed his vehicle into the entrance of 770 Eastern Parkway, damaging the historic building before being arrested. Federal authorities later charged him with intentionally damaging religious property in what prosecutors described as an antisemitic attack.
Known simply as “770,” the building is one of the most recognizable Jewish landmarks in the world. It serves as the global headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement and houses a historic synagogue and yeshiva, welcoming thousands of worshippers, students, and visitors from around the globe every year.
Following Wednesday’s incident, many people questioned how an armed individual was able to enter such a high-profile Jewish site, asking whether security at the world-famous synagogue and yeshiva is sufficient given the repeated threats it has faced.
The suspect was taken into custody by the NYPD without further incident. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Authorities have not yet released additional information regarding a possible motive.
