‘A Radicalizing Experience’: Why the Plight of ‘Chained Women’ Needs to Concern All Jews Everywhere


As a social and cultural historian of the Jews, with a special interest in Jewish women, it was only natural that Shulamit Magnus be drawn to the plight of agunot – literally “chained women” who, under rabbinic law, are stuck in their marriages either because their husbands have disappeared or because they refuse to grant them a get (Jewish bill of divorce).
