‘Squad’ member Rashida Tlaib turned Jimmy Carter’s funeral into political theater Thursday. While other dignitaries paid their final respects to the former president, Tlaib posted a photo of herself wearing a keffiyeh on social media.
“Rest in peace, President Jimmy Carter. It was an honor to be there with your family. I wore my Palestinian keffiyeh to show my gratitude for your courageous stance in speaking out against apartheid and standing up for peace,” Tlaib wrote.
It should come as little surprise though from a congresswoman who has consistently hijacked high-profile moments to advance her criticism of the Jewish State. Just this week, she blasted House colleagues for passing legislation that would sanction International Criminal Court officials seeking to prosecute Israeli leaders.
“What’s their top priority the first week of the new Congress? Lowering costs? Addressing the housing crisis? No, it’s sanctioning the International Criminal Court to protect genocidal maniac Netanyahu so he can continue the genocide in Gaza,” she riled on X.
As for Carter, who passed away on December 29 at age 100, he had his own contentious relationship with Israel. His 2006 book “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid” drew sharp criticism worldwide. It got worse from there after a high-profile visit with Hamas leadership in 2009. He later defended the terrorist group’s senior figure Khaled Mashal as someone “strongly in favor of the peace process.”
Of course, though, the 39th president’s crowning achievement was the 1979 Israel-Egypt peace accords that helped stabilize relations between both countries until this day.
Carter was complicated. Tlaib isn’t so much.
