Mike Pence Spills What Trump Told Him at Carter’s Funeral

political leaders past and present gathered to pay their final respects to President Jimmy Carter at the National Cathedral last Thursday, all eyes watched the first interaction between former President Donald Trump and his one-time vice president.

After former Vice President Al Gore exchanged pleasantries, Mike Pence rose from his seat to shake Trump’s hand for the first time in four years and shared a few brief words not loud enough for the press coverage to catch.

Speaking later to Christianity Today, Pence expressed appreciation for the moment and revealed what his former boss said to him.

“He greeted me when he came down the aisle. I stood up, extended my hand. He shook my hand. I said, ‘Congratulations, Mr. President,’ and he said, ‘Thanks, Mike.’”

“The opportunity to speak to the president yesterday is something that I appreciated, I welcomed,” he continued. “I’ve really been blessed at how much I’ve heard from people around the country who saw our handshake, and in that handshake, saw some hope that we might be moving past those difficult days.”

Those “difficult days” included one conversation where Trump shot down his former vice president’s offer to pray on his behalf.

“I said, ‘You know, there’s probably two things that we’re never going to agree on,’” Pence recalled saying during one of their final White House meetings. “We’re probably never going to agree on what my duty was under the Constitution on January 6 and I’m never going to stop praying for you.”

Trump in turn responded, “Don’t bother. That’s right. Mike, don’t ever change.”

During the interview, Pence also addressed his wife Karen’s apparent snub towards Donald and Melania as they passed her on their way to their seats.

“You’d have to ask my wife about her posture, but we’ve been married 44 years, and she loves her husband, and her husband respects her deeply,” he said.

Throughout his career, Pence has not only maintained an unblemished reputation in politics but has always shown great respect for his wife. He famously refuses to meet alone with women or attend events where alcohol is served unless Karen is present.
