President Milei Stuns Davos With Weekly Torah Portion Warns the West Is Losing Freedom • Jewish Breaking News

Argentina’s President Javier Milei used an unusual closing message at the World Economic Forum in Davos, turning to the Torah to warn that Western societies are losing their grip on freedom.

Near the end of his address, Milei referenced this week’s Torah portion, Parshat Bo, pointing to Moses confronting Pharaoh and the final three plagues described in the text: locusts, darkness, and the death of the firstborn. Milei argued that the biblical account reads like a warning to civilizations that choose control over liberty and moral clarity over convenience.

He framed the plagues as symbolic, suggesting locusts represent destruction that spreads, darkness reflects a society blinded to reality, and the death of the firstborn serves as a final consequence when leadership refuses to change course.

Milei’s remarks also come as he continues a public spiritual shift that has drawn international attention. The Argentine leader has repeatedly spoken about his ongoing Torah study with Rabbi Shimon Axel Wahnish, whom he has called a close mentor and adviser. Milei has described the learning as part of his philosophical journey and has said he is still considering conversion to Judaism.

At the same time, Milei has positioned himself as one of Israel’s strongest allies in Latin America, pushing a pro Israel direction that sharply differs from past trends in Argentina’s politics. His administration has emphasized closer ties with Jerusalem and repeatedly framed Israel as a key partner in confronting extremist threats.

By blending biblical imagery with political urgency, Milei signaled that his worldview is rooted not only in economics and policy but also in what he sees as a civilizational fight over values, faith, and freedom.
