JUST IN: Anthropic says that the U.S. Commerce Department has lifted export restrictions on its Fable and Mythos AI models, reversing a major part of an order issued less than three weeks ago that forced the company to suspend access to its most advanced systems over national security concerns.
The move comes as Washington increases scrutiny of frontier AI model releases, amid fears that advanced models could be exploited by military or intelligence-linked users in China, Russia, and other countries of concern.
Anthropic abruptly disabled access to its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models after the export-control order was issued on June 12.
On Friday, the U.S. government partially rolled back the restrictions by allowing Mythos 5 to be released to certain “trusted” American organizations.
