If you live in New York and haven’t been using New York Magazine’s new subscriber perks, you’ve already missed out on free Champagne, beer, coffee, ice cream, pastries, and Key lime pie. Maybe you were out of town on a four-month spring-summer cruise around the world. Maybe you’re severely allergic to treats.
Those excuses don’t apply to the September perk: buy-one-get-one-free movie tickets, plus a free medium popcorn, at any of Angelika’s three New York City theaters. That’s about a $30 value, and it couldn’t come at a better time of the year to go see a movie in the city. You can redeem the perk in person at the box office instead of buying tickets online. Between rep screenings and new premieres, there’s an overwhelming variety of stuff to see. Here are our best bets for each location during September.
A slew of Sundance and TIFF favorites are playing this month at the OG Houston Street Angelika, including the absolutely delightful-sounding Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty!, which opens in 35-mm. September 25 and promises to be the best movie about the Tokyo ballroom-dancing scene since Shall We Dance?. This is also an excellent month for new documentaries, with Colette Ghunim’s Traces of Home, about her family’s history as refugees from Palestine and Mexico (opens September 18), and The Oldest Person in the World, about the oldest person in the world (opens September 11).
You can still see The Odyssey in 70-mm. in one of the most beautiful movie-theater auditoriums in the city at Angelika Village East. You can take a film bro in your life to a nine-hour Godfather marathon on September 20, or you can enjoy the quintessential autumnal movie date at You’ve Got Mail on September 28. Drag queen Hedda Lettuce will also host her “Hedda Lettuce Presents” series on Thursday nights; her “September Sizzles” lineup for the month fixates on Bette Davis flicks, with The Star (September 10) and Dead Ringer (September 17).
In the mysterious zone where Midtown East becomes the Upper East Side, you can still get tickets to a Cinema 123’s 35-mm. Clockwork Orange screening featuring a Q&A with Malcolm McDowell on September 16. And if you miss that, McDowell will be doing a Q&A for his 2025 movie Last Train to Fortune on the 17th.
I personally will be using this deal to bring a Hinge date to Lance Oppenheim’s Chris Hansen movie starring Robert Pattinson, Primetime, when it premieres September 25, because that is completely good and normal subject matter for a first date.
