New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani shaved his beard, leaving his mustache, to mark the month of “Movember,” the annual global charity campaign in November that raises awareness of men’s health issues, including prostate and testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention.
The mayor appeared in an ad explaining the new look and announcing that it comes along with a $4 million investment in a brand-new prostate cancer center at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn.
Brooklyn City Council member Rita Joseph also appeared in the video announcement, wearing a fake mustache to show support for Movember.
Joseph opened the ad by saying, “I like the new stache, babe.”
“I like yours too,” the mayor said. “Whether you’re growing your own—”
“Or getting a little help,” the council member interjected.
“Thousands of people will be sporting mustaches this November, and they’ll be doing it to raise awareness of men’s health issues, including mental health disorders, testicular cancer, and prostate cancer,” Mamdani said.
“This year, our administration, in partnership with Councilmember Joseph, is investing $4 million towards a brand-new prostate cancer center at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn,” he added.
Later in the ad, the mayor said, “Together, we’re fighting health disparities, reducing stigma around our own medical care, and building a healthier New York City.”
“What do you think?” he asked, turning to Joseph. “Handlebar next?”
“No, you’re going too far,” she said.
Mamdani is expected to keep the new look until the end of the month and then decide if he wants to grow his beard back.
