Democrats are projected to take control of the U.S. Senate with at least 51 seats, following victories in Republican strongholds including North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Kansas, and Iowa.
With Democrats also projected to capture the House, Chuck Schumer would become Senate majority leader, while Hakeem Jeffries would become House speaker in January.
For President Trump, the consequences could be enormous.
Democrats would gain subpoena power, launch congressional investigations, block key legislation, and potentially derail Trump’s judicial and Cabinet nominations.
The president would retain his veto power, but his legislative agenda would face significant resistance.
The stage is set for two years of divided government, congressional investigations, and political battles heading into the 2028 presidential election.
