WATCH: Jewish Lawmaker Tests Whether Controversial Coffee Shop Will Serve Zionists

New York State Assemblyman Michael Novakhov had himself filmed entering a Poetica café to see if they would serve a proud Zionist Jew like him.

“This is Poetica Coffee, the Brooklyn coffee shop that publicly celebrated refusing service to Congressman Dan Goldman over his support for Israel,” the assemblyman voiced over a scene of himself striding into the shop. “With the Department of Justice now investigating, I decided to stop by and ask a simple question. Will they serve a proud Jewish Zionist like me?”

Novakhov, who was born in Azerbaijan, which was then part of the Soviet Union, then asked the barista if he would be served.

“Do you still sell coffee to Zionists, to Jewish, to, to pro-Israel, to everyone?”

The answer can’t be heard in the video, but the politician then said, “You do? Really? Oh, look at that! So they learned their lesson, because they, you know, they refused to sell it to Dan Goldman, what was it, yesterday, or the day before?”

“Now there’s a Department of Justice investigation against this store because they refused to do that,” he added.

The brouhaha started Sunday after Rep. Goldman (D-N.Y.) had been served his coffee, paid and left. A social media post later in the day from the café, directed at Goldman, said that they would not have served him had they known who he was, that they had refunded his AIPAC-tainted money, and that he should never patronize their shop again.

The Department of Justice announced Monday that it had launched a probe into the incident, explaining that Poetica Coffee may have violated anti-discrimination laws. Brad Lander, Goldman’s opponent in the race, who won Tuesday’s primary handily, condemned the actions of the coffee shop, while New City Mayor Zohran Mamdani offered a tepid response.
